                Institutes & Centers

                Institute of System Integration

                The main missions of Institute of System Integration are conducting scientific and engineering researches, and providing all-level graduate programs. Currently working here are more than 30 research staffs, including 7 professors, 10 associate professors, 10 post-doctorate fellows, as well as engineers. Here are about one hundred graduates including 45 Ph.d. candidates and 56 master students. Main research focuses on Complex Manufacturing System Modeling,Intelligent Optimization and Control, Simulation and Virtual Manufacturing, Modern Service Technology and Engineering, Network manufacturing, Modern Logistics and E-Commerce, Enterprise Informationization Engineering.

                As a main division of the National CIMS Engineering and Research Center , this institute plays a leading role on research and development in Chinese CIMS domain. Many key projects from National 973, 863, National Natural Science Foundation, International Cooperation were carried out here, like CIMS experiment engineering, Concurrent engineering, CIMS application integration platform, virtual manufacturing, National Education Resource Sharing, E-Commerce, and other important engineering projects.

                Institute of Process Control Engineering

                 The Institute of Process Control Engineering currently consists of 14 staffs, including 7 full professors, 6 associate professors and 1 engineer, as well as more than 60 master and Ph. D candidates.

                Process control belongs to Control Science and Engineering, one of the firstly awarded National Key Disciplines. The main research interests of the institute include integrated automation in process industry, process modeling and optimization, advanced process control, fault diagnosis and fault tolerant control, fault prediction and predictive maintenance, field-bus control system, batch process control, process logistic and supply chain, networked control system. In recent years, some new research interests have also been involved in the institute, such as control system of large special metallurgical equipment, intelligent drive decision, etc.

                There are 5 research and education laboratories related to process control in the Department Automation, including Process Control Lab., Integrated Automation Laboratorial Platform of Process Industry, Virtual Refinery Lab., Lab. of Industrial Data Communication and Control Network, Biochemistry Lab. 

                Institute of Control Theory and Technology

                This institute has 17 teachers, including 8 professors and 7 associate professors. They undertake 34 courses with 14 for the graduate students and 20 for the undergraduate students.

                The main research directions include: Control Theory: nonlinear control, robust control, robust identification, fuzzy control; Technology and Applications: computer vision and computer graphics, intelligent robot control, power electronics and motion control, precise guidance and control.

                Several key projects are charged with, the research funds are over 10 million a year, and hundreds of papers are published by the teachers of this institute in famous journals including “Automatica”, “IEEE Trans. on Automatic Control”, “IET Control Theory and Applications”, “International Journal of Control”, and so on. Several national awards were won including National Award for Technological Invention and National Science and Technology Progress Award.

                Institute of Measurement and Electronic Technology

                There are 31 teachers in the Institute of Measurement and Electronic Technology, among them are 3 doctorial tutors, 7 professors, 15 associate professors. This institute belongs to the subject of “Measurement technology and Automation Equipment”, it has given master degree to 182 people and PhD degree to 19 people.

                The course of “Fundamentals of Analogue Electronic Technology”, “Fundamentals of Digital Electronic Technology” and “Principle of Microprocessors” taught by this institute earned the first rank courses in Tsinghua University. 19 different textbooks has been published by this institute, among them 5 textbooks earned the national award.

                The main research scope of this institute are: Intelligent measurement instruments, Multi-sensor signal fusion, Novel large power supply convertor techniques, Networked signal detection and processing techniques, Detection and diagnosis of malfunctions in control systems, Intelligent house and intelligent building networks etc..

                This institute paid a lot of attention to the collaborations with international and national enterprises, so that the conditions of experiment and research work have been greatly improved. Up to now, 4 joint laboratories have been established, such as the Microcontroller Laboratory invested by NEC of Japan, the AS-i Technology Laboratory invested by P+F company in Germany, the Hightech research center invested by Shengzhen Longxiang company, and the Intelligent house technique Laboratory invested by Tongfang company. Total investment is over 10 million RMB. Since 1987, more than 200 research papers have been published, more than 27 research projects have been finished, 3 of them reached the international level, 13 of them were first invented in China. 3 patents are held by this institute.

                Institute of Information Processing

                The Institute of Information Processing (IIP) was founded in 1981, and its Ph.D. program of Pattern Recognition and Intelligent Systems was one of the earliest Ph.D. programs established after China resumed its system for graduate study, and it was also one of the earliest postdoc research stations after China established its postdoctorial research system. The program has a high reputation in this field in China. Under the leadership of CAS Academician Prof. Yanda Li and former Prof. Tong Chang, IIP has always ground its research on the current advancement of information science and technology and the need of the development of China. The goal of IIP is to pursuit excellence in the research and development in the field of information science and technology, as well as in emerging multidisciplinary fields, and to provide advanced training for future scientists and engineers in related fields.

                The academic foundation of the Institute is signal and information processing, and pattern recognition and intelligent systems. IIP is involved in a series of in-depth studies on aspects of basic theory and fundamental methodologies. At the same time, according to the trends in scientific advancement and the needs of the social and economic development of China, IIP has taken active roles in the application of intelligent information processing technologies in fields including geophysical exploration, biometric identification and fingerprint recognition, information processing for networks and multimedia, radar and communication signal processing, video surveillance and computer vision, and biomedical imaging. Many academic achievements have been converted into practical applications. In recent years, with the completion of the Human Genome Projects, IIP has been very active in fields of bioinformatics and computational molecular and systems biology, as well as the modernization of Traditional Chinese Medicine.

                The current faculty of IIP includes one Academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences (Prof. Yanda Li), one Changjiang Chair Professor (Prof. Michael Q. Zhang), another 7 full professors and 2 associate professors. Among them, one has received the National Award for Outstanding Young Scientists, two have received the National Award for Excellent Doctorial Thesis, and three have been named the New Century Excellent Talents by the Ministry of Education. Several hundreds of graduate students have earned their Ph.D. or Master’s degree, or completed their postdoctorial research in the Institute. The total number of current graduate students in the Ph.D and Master’s program is around 100, and there are 7 postdoc fellows currently working in the Institute.

                The Institute has put large effort in integrating its research and teaching activities. The curriculum is designed by putting balanced emphasis on the fundamentals and the current advancements in research. Some new courses on information theory, signal and image processing, pattern recognition, artificial intelligence and machine learning, statistical learning theory and support vector machines, computational molecular biology and bioinformatics have been introduced into the curriculum in a timely manner. In recent 10 years, 13 new courses have been presented, and the faculty has published 11 textbooks, many of which are adopted by other universities in China.

                The IIP maintains extensive international academic connections. Communications and collaborations are implemented by frequent faculty visits and exchange students. The institutions that have frequent exchange and collaboration with IIP include Harvard University, Harvard Medical School, Harvard School of Public Health, Stanford University, Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, University of Southern California, Indian Statistical Institute, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, etc.

                Institute of System Engineering

                Institute of Systems Engineering was founded in 1979. It is one of the first few Ph.D. Programs (more precisely, one of the first 6 Ph.D. Programs in Systems Engineering) authorized by Chinese government. It has Post-doctoral research program, too. Now, there are 7 faculties/staffs in Institute of Systems Engineering, including two full professors, one researcher, three associate professors, and one engineer. Among them, two are Ph.D. advisors and six are Master advisors. There are also two visiting scholars and four adjunct professors.

                There are two specialized laboratories in Institute of Systems Engineering: Systems Engineering Laboratory and Intelligent Transportation Systems Joint Laboratory. We are meanwhile a part of Tsinghua National Laboratory for Information Science and Technology.

                Institute of Systems Engineering offers the following undergraduate course: Operation Research, Introduction to Systems Engineering, Freshman Seminar on Intelligent Transportation Systems, Multimedia Technology and Application, E-Business, Computer Networks, Selected Topics on Intelligent Vehicles. The Institute also offers the following graduate courses: System Theory, Convex Optimization, System Modeling Theory and Analysis, System Analysis and Methods. Soft Computing, A Brief Introduction of Intelligent Transportation Systems, Intelligent Transportation Systems: Modeling and Simulation.

                In recent years, Institute of Systems Engineering has undertaken and completed more than 30 scientific research projects, including one National “973” Project, four National “863” Projects, two National Scientific and Technological Support Projects in the 11th five-year, five Projects supported by National Natural Science Foundation of China, two Tsinghua University “985” Projects, three Projects supported by Beijing Municipal Science and Technology Commission, and one Key Crossover Project supported by Tsinghua University. We had won the first prize in National Scientific and Technological Progress once and also the second prize once. We had won 8 provincial and ministerial level scientific awards.

                Center for Intelligent and Networked Systems

                The Center for Intelligent and Networked Systems (CFINS) is to provide a physical and intellectual environment for the intelligent analysis, design, and operation of complex and networked systems such as computer and communication networks, power systems, and supply chains by making innovative use of analytical methods and information technology.

                With its research team consisting of internationally well-known visiting members from US and Hong Kong and resident members from Tsinghua as well as Tsinghua's top notch graduate students, the Center provides outstanding opportunities for interdisciplinary research and education that are responsive to the changing needs of the society. The collective vision of its members and the emphasis on addressing emerging and critical issues through advanced theoretical methods will make Tsinghua University, in particular its School of Information Science & Technology and the Department of Automation, a renowned center of gravity on intelligent and networked systems.

                Navigation and Control Research Center

                The Navigation and Control Research Center includes 4 professors and more than 30 master and Ph. D candidates. This center belongs to the subject of “Navigation, Guidance and Control”.

                The main research scopes of this center are: Micro-satellite Engineering, Space robot, Nonlinear control theory and its applications in the attitude and orbit control of satellite, System identification and its applications in the satellite modeling, Flight control system, Complex navigation system, Flight management system, Air traffic management, Fault diagnosis and reliability analysis, Intelligent coordinative control of multiple unmanned system, Multiple-agent theory and technology, etc.

                In recent years, the center has undertaken and completed several national scientific research projects, including National “973” Project, National “863” Projects, etc., and many papers are published by the teachers and students of this center in the famous international academic journals including “IEEE Transactions on Control System Technology”, “IEEE/ASME Transactions on Mechatronics”, “IEEE Transactions on Image Processing”, “AIAA Journal of Guidance Control and Dynamics”, “Aerospace Science and Technology”, “Aircraft Engineering and Aerospace Technology: An International Journal”, “Asian Journal of Control” and so on.
